So I want to refinish my rims since I bought them used and they had been curbed. the curbage is light, so it's not terribly noticable unless you're within like 3 feet from the rims.

so my question is, I want to do a light sanding of the rim edges with some fine sandpaper and then finish it off with a polish, so do I need to repaint them since they're alloy wheels? they don't have any chrome or anything and as far as I know, they're not painted.

the rims i'm doing this on are G35 Rays: there isn't any damage on this wheel in particular, but it shows the type of rim i'm talking about

Are you planning to do this yourself? I looked into refinishing my own wheels and didn't find much good news. If it's curbed you want to sand down, then Bondo, then paint it.

That's what you're looking for.

Off topic: I notice those lugs, where and how much was it? I'm contemplating getting a set for myself.

yeah i've looked into doing a complete refinishing process before, with the whole deal of bondo, sand, repaint but i don't think the damage to my rims is so extensive that i need to do any filling, just a light sanding should be enough.. but my wonder if the exposed part of the rim will suffer any kind of damage, like rust. but i don't think they'll rust since after being curbed, they're exposed anyways and no rust has formed.

so if i just sand them down a little bit and then polish, do i risk longterm damage to the rims?

and for the lugs, i bought them from the guy that i got the rims from, $50 bucks for the set, and i've taken off my wheel locks so that i have all 5 that match. so sorry i have no idea where to buy a set, but they sure look sweet

you got it done for $300 right? do you know if he would fix some minor curb rashes too before he did the powdercoating?

he does a chemical strip and light sandblast...not sure if that would fix up any surface damage...it would if its not very deep. I'm sure he could refinish the damage...since he does metal refinishing. Just drop in to mission...ask for Terry. I think i emailed you the contact info a while ago? hit me up if u need it again.

i don't think i ever asked you any info about powdercoating before since i never had anything to powdercoat, maybe it was someone else. anyways i don't really have the opportunity right now to send off my wheels for any length of time since they're my only set. i might have to wait until winter when i throw on my yet to be acquired snowies. i guess i'll just live with the nasti rashed up rims till then

It was actually me that you emailed the info to

I've just been strapped for cash so I haven't done anything about it yet...

i wonder how much easier it is to refinish a set of wheels with the tires off. when i got the rims, i replaced the tires with a used set of tires and had them swapped and mounted for $100 plus tax, so i don't exactly want to get them unmounted and remounted if I refinish them. i've seen people do refinishing with the tires still on, they just tape it all off to make sure the tires don't get anything on them, but i wonder if it's worth the trouble to leave them on or if i could save myself a big headache ($100 bux worth) by taking them off.

i probably should have thought ahead and had the old tired unmounted, refinished them, mount the new tires, then sell my stockers... that's what i get for not planning ahead
