Well I came into the problem with finding a 12pt 13mm (1/2") socket for installing the ARP head stud bolts. The Craftsman ones I have just dont fit into the head to get down to the bolts. But I finally got a socket and will rent it out to anyone who needs it FOR FREE (CA owners like free).

Just shoot me an e-mail or reply here and I'll mail it to you, but you have to mail it back when you're done!

Yeah man that's something I had my head clearanced for. I was seething with rage when I went to take the head off and a) my awesome medium-wall ARP specific slim 1/2in socket was MIA, and b) my craftsman deep wall 1/2in socket was mockingly close to fitting. Spitting in my face even. Went to machine shop and said "want fit here!! RAWR!" and pointed. Totally worth the $40 or whatever because now I just laugh maniacally when I get to that point in assembly/disassembly.

Damn... ..mine was like $15. It was soooo boss though!! Believe me when I say it was boss.

I agree sjb, not being able to remove engine bits turns me into a knuckle-dragging caveman too. I grunt and throw things in a blind rage.

I don't know if anyone is going to need to rent this, but its really cool that the offer is out there. Cheers!

Did your head stud kit come with washers too?Mine has washers and there is no way they will fit into the existing head bores (or cavities) Should I put the washers in the head first, and then try to set the head on the studs? and then try to find the correct 12pt deep socket?

yea put the washers in the head before putting the head down. works way better. then dry the socket. I had to buy a craftsman thin wall 13mm 12pt deep socket and still grind it down. works like a charm tho

Ugh, ok. I was hoping to find something that I could buy off the intarwab to get this done.

I just figured out the washer thing as I was typing the first message.. doh!

did you just grind the tool with a bench grinder or lathe it down?

Just turned one down on a 12pt deep socket on a lathe today. No problems now.

any chance for a photo of what your socket looks like? mine are allll too thick. my 13mm certainly doesnt fit, and its relatively narrow.

I was concerned wit the tolerance that the flanks of the socket made contact with the flanks on the nut so i ordered a snap-on 13mm 12pt (snap-on 12pt sockets are tolereance to + or - .0005 or .001 total) and then turned it down .020 on the lathe in the machineshop where im in college at

I've still got my ground down socket, but I think the next time I have the head off I'm gonna have the bores opened up as there are a couple that still rub a little and I don't think there is enough meat left on the socket to take anymore off of it.

u can actually grind one down almost paper thin and then take a cheap torch with a tank of mapp gas and heat it till its red hot for 60 seconds and then drop it down in water to harden it. do it only once but anymore the rockwell scale gets to high and the steel will go from hard to brittle

Can anyone confirm, if the 1/2" socket fits over it perfectly, like it should? I've seen both 13mm and 1/2" being mentioned. Thanks!

I just bought a house Dec. 16th 2013, and have yet to move all my tools to my new garage (lots of snow and sub-zero temperatures..), but its warming up to like 30 today and tomorrow so I'm going to grab my tools and take them home. I'll dig the socket out and take a look at it. I'm pretty sure I used a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter and used a 13mm socket that I took to the grinder. I'll throw a pic up here tomorrow as well.

I'm 100% sure mine is a deep well, 13mm, 12pt. socket that I ground down to fit.

Thanks, I know a 13mm socket works, that's what I used last time, but I had the head clearanced for it. I'd rather not do that again with another head, should it come to it, but grind down a socket instead. I'd just like to make sure what the right socket is. 13mm vs. 1/2", that's +0.3mm more material I can leave on it, which is a lot for a thin wall socket.

On my SR's head studs, I used a 12point 1/2" socket, but it's 3/8" drive on an adapter.

Went straight to the source to confirm, since I'm hearing multiple reliable sources telling different things.
ARP, (Automotive Racing Products) wrote: 202-4702 and 202-4302 both have 1/2 socket head.
For reference, one is the Euro, the other the JDM head stud kit.
I'd say, avoid using the metric 13mm socket, if you have the chance.
