Nope it no joke, Renault makes the standard transmission, Nissan and Renault use the common B platform for the chassis and both shar the same engines.

This is the main reason I bought the Versa, is it's the only 50% Renault product state side.

On a side note the 2010 Nissan Maxima will have a Renault Diesel engine option .

Yeap... Renault has been working with Nissan since 1999... So a lot of the cars are a mix between the two companies... (Well, I think Renault continues selling full-european cars, while Nissan has adopted a lot of Renault parts)

In fact, here in Panama we used to have 2 very similar cars from the two companies... Nissan used to sell the Nissan Platina, and Renault was selling (and it's still selling) the Clio. Pictures:

Of course, the Renault was like $3000 more, just for being an "European" car... (And they used the same parts...)

Renault and Nissan have been together for several years. I think its a 50/50. But yes, some parts on the Versa are renault.

Nissan and Renault have been working together since the mid-1990s. Renault owns 44% of Nissan, and Nissan owns a small portion of Renault. They're really the same entity from a top-level business point of view, and a lot of their products are shared or based on shared tech. The Versa isn't the first car to utilize shared technology from the coop.

They mainly do cross platform things or share in engine development. The Renault M4R and Nissan MR18DE are the same engine.

There is a lot of commonality between the Renault Clio & the Versa. I rented a Clio for a few days in February in the UK. The interior looked exactly like a Versa S.

The engine was a1.2L & the transmission a 5-speed manual. This is different from the Versa

Sadly, Nissan has decided the Maxima diesel is probably not a good move. It's not likely to happen at this point. I was looking forward to a 400+ ft-lb Maxima.

alberich,

Too bad you didn't get the 197hp 2.0 Clio Sport. That looks like fun.

I loved driving the Clio but would love the mid engine version.

Drove a Clio once in Spain. Nice freaking car.

Actually the Versa reminded me a lot of it, and I had no idea that Nissan and Renault were sharing tech until after I had bought the car.

Keep in mind that even though the cars share "tech," the similarities are pretty schematic. The Clio has more in common with the March than the Versa. The Versa shares it's platform and tech with both cars, but has been altered in a lot of ways. It is significantly bigger than the March or Clio (almost 2 feet longer than the Clio). It has really been stretched to stand closer in size to the Sentra than it's fellow B-platform cars.

I thought the Clio and the March shared one platform, and the Versa/Tiida and the Megane shared a different platform?

The Megane is a C-platform car, like the Sentra. It's not (as I've seen stated before) related to the Versa. The Versa is a B-platform car like the Clio and March. The Versa and Megane are very similar in dimension, though.
