Removing Y33 Shifter Knob and Stalk (98 Q45)

I need to replace the cracked plastic shifter plate on my 98 and need to know how I can carefully remove the shift knob and shift stalk to allow the plastic plate to be removed. It appears the plastic surround piece is held in place with a few clips on the sides. Once I remove the stick I should have no problem installing the new piece.

The plastic piece I am referring to is the one that goes around the shifter stick and has the PRND12 shift indicators on it. I am really worried about messing up the shift lock button and/or the OD button. I can see two screw heads on the back of the chrome shifter stick below the leather shift knob.

I looked in the FSM and could not find this. They explain how to remove the entire shifter, but not this piece separately.
