Okay, I searched and read a bunch of topics on the infamous upper timing chain guide, which I suspect may be the source of a new noise....main question: is there a specific gasket I will have to replace if I take the cover off? Seems like there is but then why does courtesy parts only sell a tube of silicone with their timing kits?edit:Okay, did some more searching and the gasket shoud remain intact on the cover....right? - it didedit2: pulled it off to find that the guide had been removed by the previous owner - DOH! Must be one of the pullies? It's kind of a rattle that (at least under load) increases with the rpms...got a belt that squeals after the car's really warmed up, again when the revs get up. ??????

Sound like you might have a bad tensioner and its builing up too much slack in the timing chain and rattling against your valve cover. I have a bad tensioner too and I replaced everything 5000 miles ago to have it happen again a few months ago. Nick

Would slack in the timing chain be apparent when the motor is off? I had a look at it and then cranked the car a few times while my pops looked at the rest of the chain and it looked good, very tight.

You might not be able to tell when the motor is off. Check the tensioner on the passenger side. I don't know your current stuation or the sound. Nick
