Hey guys -does anyone know if removing the resonator will give the Q any more HP. One of my friends with a 740i did it and he said he gained 5hp or so - according to his mecahnic. If this is true it's a cheap way to get 4-5 HP. I read some articles and some say it only makes the engine louder, and fewer say that it does improve the HP, one said that the air filter would have to be cleaned twice as often...What do you guys think? Thanks,Chaz

Air filter worries are untrue - Whoever said that needs to be linked to http://www.howstuffworks.com.

Removing the resonator can help if it is restrictive.

5 HP is within the margin of error of dynamometer measurements and unnoticeable.

It may help, but just as easily could hurt. Look it as if it were an exhaust header. It's part of the "air pump" system that is the engine. In my experience, resonators have been tuned by engineers primarily for tonal quality and to meet noise pass by standards. Secondary effect is in efficency. Just like a header, intake runner, etc. the resonator will have an effect on the wavelength (pluse) and may cause shifts in hp/torque. But hey, you can definately change the engine quality to more "raw power" sound, and that may be worth it by itself. Remember there are alot of header & exhaust systems out there that actually hurt hp &/or torque, but they still sell because they sound cool.

thanks for all the info. In reading, I figured it was mostly the sound that would be gained - which I already have the stillen exhaust and it already sounds good. She's running perfect (knock on wood) so I probably won't do anythingn since 1-5 HP is unnoticeable...thanks again -Chaz

What it did was give me a nice tone and most important was the weight savings, this mod was recomended by Q45TECH himself, if it did pick up HP I cant say I noticed but it didnt hurt, go to the multi media section to find video clips of the exhaust:) Im waiting for AZ to finish the exhaust from BRM then I can make some HPs

We have two different conversations going on here, intake resonator & exhaust resonator. I don't care if it doesn't make any power, I'd do it. In my experience, it does add a bit of power & makes for some interesting aural experiences.

I've seen it, it looks like a horse with a big horn in the center of it's head.
