how does one remove the stock fan clutch? i've removed the actual fan blades themselves, but the clutch is still stuck on there. took out the bolts that looked like were holding it on there, but the clutch doesnt just come off. didnt really try banging at it... is there anything else thats needed to take that piece off? the fsm shows the part as removable

you need to use a pully puller. go to a local autozone or something and they will let u use one.

when i removed mine, i just unbolt the 4 or 5 10mm nuts on the front and the fan slid off, without force. then put the nuts back and tighten. that's there is to it. i don't see why it's so difficult? well, unless your's bind to the pully, then you'll just take the entire pully off and separate the two, it should just slides off.

here's a crappy drawing of what im trying to remove. I've already removed the bolts that look like hold the spindle to the oil pump pulley. Is there anything else that is holding the spindle to the pulley, or is mine just a little rusted? If thats the case ill bang on it some to make it come off...

that is the water pump pully the fan is connected to, not oil pump.

the inner 4 nuts need to be remove...if the clutch assembly is stuck, try spray some wd40 on there and use a hammer and tap around there, becareful not to bend the water pump pully. or you can just loosen the belt and pull the whole pully out, you should be able to snatch it off w/ your hand after the 4-bolts and the belt is off....

this might give you some idea of what it should look like after the fan is off.

ahh, yes i meant water pump but wrote out oil pump for some reason. thanks for the tips.

Do those 4 bolts which hold the clutch fan flange also keep the water pump pulley on there?

yes, that's why you need to tighten back the 4 nuts after taken off the clutch fan.

tried for a little last night to take the clutch fan flange off from the water pump pulley. seems like mine is on there pretty good.

At least i know that it is *supposed* to separate there now... so i can go at it a little more. will try again tonight when pulling my turbos. thanks

thanks for the help. got it off yesterday with some use of my fine adjustment tool (hammer). Tried doing civilized techniques like prying, wedging stuff next to the flange, etc. Broke a screwdriver tip in the process!

eventually just took a hammer to it and started hitting the back of the clutched fan fins directly (junk anyway). Both the water pump pulley and flange came off after about 20 cracks.
