I'm trying to install my z1 short shifter, but im having a problem removing the stock shifter fromn the car. The only problem i have thats preventing me from installing is that the pivot at the bottom of the stock shifter is a ball shape, and doesn't fit through the V bracket that holds the shifter in place. The short shifter i ordered has a smaller pivot that looks like would fit easily within the V bracket, but the stock one will not fit through..
All of the searches i've looked up, it seems like everyone elses pivot is similar in size to my short shifter's pivot. I just don't understand why mine is differnt.. If anyone can help that would be great, because this has caused me a massive headache for something that I figured would be fairly straight forward..

heres a photo of where im stuck. I cant get the pivot through the hole... & I did disconnect the connecting bolt that is underneath.

Thanks in advance.

First of all, that is not the stock shifter. Looks like an eBay special short shifter, possibly a Stillen also. Those unscrew apart into three pieces. Top attaches to the knob, bottom bolts to the shift linkage and the centre pivot ball assembly. The top and bottom unscrews from each other. Bolt back up the bottom longer bolt attaching the shifter to linkage as an anchor point, unscrew the top. Hope that helps.

FYI the z1 shifter will have about the same throw as the one you have, but will probably be smother because of the needle bearing design.

Great.. another previous owners problem  I tried twisting it apart as hard as i could doesn't seem to twist apart. I might need to get some grip on the bottom pivot, but its hard to fit a vice grip in there. I seem to have the silver part that had the 4 screws in dangling around. I tried to pull it upwards to remove it completely but it doesn't seem to move up much. I guess i'll hang tight until someone who had something familiar posts something.

Thanks for the fast response !

Ive installed and removed many of those shifters. Bolt the bottom pivot "ball" back onto the transmission linkage; that way it will not turn on you. Turn the top half off with a suiutable tool.
