First, find and read the mother of all fuel pump posts in IOM.

Good, then you know how to check if you fried your FPCU by ignoring your FP wailing.

you shouldn't have to... if you do, remove the seat back with the tabs on the floor then unbolt the seat backs and you can pop it off

You've got the seats out so now you need to remove the 3 or 4 plastic buttons along the leading edge of the deck that were formerly covered by the seat back. Then remove the 3rd brake light by pushing the assembly a little bit left or right while rotating. You'll find the right combination and it will come right out.

Next just slide both arms under the deck and lift. There's about 10-12 plastic tabs along the perimeter so keep lifting with both arms until they're all loose. Once it's loose you can turn it a bit sideways and pull it out the door.

Find all the loose plastic clips and reinsert them in the deck before reinstallation. When reinstalling the deck, line up the rear set of holes first and hit each with the palm of your hand until you feel each clip pop back in. If you get the rear set in the rest of the clips should align.

It's pretty easy to do all this and once you've done it once you'll be an expert the second time around. Good luck.

It's clockwise.

Take my suggestion and read the IOM posting and you can be an expert the first time and not fubar anything.

The advice pablum you are getting above is just enough to get you into trouble.

Take a look at the FSM and you'll see that there are no real instructions for removing the deck, just a pretty blow-up picture. The "pablums" you refer to are the supplements to the FSM that all of us are here to get from experienced owners who have completed this simple job. To be honest it's pretty hard to screw up removing or reinstalling the rear seat and deck.

If you really want to mess up, read the FSM and nothing else to R&R the fuel pump. Without the compilation of "pablums" by Tangelora and many others with experience you'd have plenty of opportunity to botch the job and possibly burn your car to the ground as you light your first cigarette before you figure out there's anything wrong.

Also take a look at the FSM for ohm testing the injectors. You won't find instructions for ohming at the harness but it will show you (through drawings) how to remove the plenum and ohm each injector individually. There's lots of pablums if you search for a 10 minute ohming of the injectors rather than removing the plenum each time. If pablums are unacceptable I guess there's no need for the Q45 forum. Buy a FFSM and be done with it. My 2 cents on our pablums.

This tends to be helpful...

... just remove the center storage compartment to give you manuvering room for CAREFULLY getting the pump/sending unit out without bending anything.

1.) Au contraire, mon ami! Many first time replacers either have bent the fuel level arm gauge on installation, not placed a new sock on the pickup, not used a new O ring, stripped the threads on the fuel pump, broken the shelf or parcel shelf container lids, etc. Some have inflicted multiple injuries on their cars.

Just as your answer is imprecise concerning the removal of the CHMBL, you could not hope to include the all the information available in the IOM thread.

2.) Tangalora's posts are prime filet. Sometimes it is best to let new owners experience the full taste and texture of the orginal thread rather than regurgitating a nice predigested pablum that is somehow incomplete and lacking the original's appeal.

I know you meant to help, but ommission of details that are in the primary posts, no matter how trivial, is a less than complete experience.

Didn't H. L. Mencken say something like, "For every problem there is a simple answer that is sweet, short and completely wrong"? I think answers that omit details are not completely correct, hence my preference to refer new members to the original rich discussions less the nuances get lost in summation, no matter how well intentioned.

And here's the Fuel Pump Replacement thread. Tangalora's detailed instructions are on page 2:
