Hey guys I'm in the process of stripping my 89 coupe and I'm trying to get the steering wheel off. I've used the search button here and tried to find detailed info elsewhere and the general concencus is that the center bolt is to be loosened and left on so the wheel doesnt hit you in the face when you try and pull it off.

I am almost certain I have all of the screws and bolts out that could be hindering me. I have been told that it's as easy as putting some elbow grease into it and just "yanking it off" or "wiggling" it off.

I have yet to check for the steering removal tool I have heard of that is available at a place like autozone however I would like to avoid having to do this if this is potentially a simple problem that I have somewhere messed up.

Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks

i heated it up a little bit and then hit it with a rubber mallet, then it slid right off.

if you heat up the shaft, melt some wax into it and it should come right off

I had to use a steering wheel puller on mine, but it had never been taken off and was stuck on there. You can try the rubber mallet, sometimes it works.

scooz14:

I've tried a rubber mallet and some wd-40 sprayed around the bolt area with no luck.

SR20DET.240:I'm pretty sure that mine has never been taken off either being as it used to be owned by a grandma and a guy who seemed to see the ac, stereo head unit, and window tint as it's highlighted qualities.

As for the steering wheel puller where did you get it? How much did it cost?

I got mine for like 15 dollars at a local parts store. I wouldn't spend the money on big name tools for something you might only use a couple times.
