I want a louder tone and I got quoted about $160 to remove my reso and muffler. He even said he'll remove the reso first and see if I like how it sounds and remove the muffler if I still would like it louder. Has anybody done this to their M and will removing the muffler affect my smog results? I am from Cali? I will post up a video after it gets done. I have an appointment next week.

Thanks.
Jeff

No offense bro, but it is an M45 and not a Honda Civic. Save another $150 and put a Megan axle back on there. They offer a mid pipe also with great sounding resonators. You could also make a custom exhaust with a couple Flowmaster 50's.it will be really loud without the mufflers and you will not pass smog visual inspection without mufflers.

Thanks for the info. I think I will just have the reso removed.

Cars rarely sound good (or perform better) by deleting the exhaust system. In fact, a good exhaust is like a musical instrument and can enhance the sound. There is a reason exotic car owners often spend $3,000+ on their exhausts.

I took mine off. There's a distinctive rumble when revved, but not really a big difference at idle.

The thing to note as different is that I also put in its place a Raceland remote cutout to maximize the fun factor. Removal of the resonator & installation of the cutout was only $120. (I did the very simple electrical wiring.) It might be a little slower off the line when open, I'm not sure.

Floor it at highway speed from about 60 with it open and the butt dyno tells me that performance has improved, no question.

Here's a sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmCvTddcMmY

It gives the sound (closed) without the resonator and open (loud as hell). Not my car, but it sounds just like it.

Inherently, with a cutout, I'm leaking a little sound from the cutout device. So yours will almost certainly be quieter if all you do is put a pipe back in place of the resonator.

I did this on my 06 M45. I had them chop off the exhaust from the cats back and fab one up. It's 2.5" with a custom x-pipe. I love the sound, however anything over about 3200-3600RPM and it starts to get a little raspy. I think Im going to buy the Megan axle backs and have them installed.

I will add that I noticed better response and more pickup according to my "butt dyno".
