I have a s13 but probably similar on s14 also. Has anyone just replaced the mid muffler on the stock set up with a straight pipe and a hanger?? Was wondering what it sounded like. Would love keeping exhaust stock mostly but get little more grunt and better flow through. Could be cheap alteration. Any thoughts??

It's going to sound like crap. It sounds way better in stock form than with stock piping straight through. If you decide to do this, get a resonator, thats what basically makes the exhaust tone. Or you could make your own piping with a resonator and a nice muffler.

You aren't really going to see any gains regardless. It might feel faster, but you probably are adding 3 hp.

Just to be clear, I meant leaving rear large muffler in place, just straight through on mid muffler...still sounds bad???

Saw it and love it, but cheap and want to spend little since exhaust is still good. Just want slight rumble. Guess I'll keep the top down and listen to intake.

When i bought my 240 it had the resinator cut out and a straight pipe in its place. It sounds ok. It isn't anything crazy or annoying or loud.

it really doesnt change teh sound much at all. the stock rear muffler really restricts and quiets the sound down alot. so if you remove the little muffler under the car, it wont do much to the sound and get ready to recieve a whopping....0 hp!!!!but yeah in all seriousness, dont bother unless your just bored and want to hack somthing up for the heck of it.just put a straight pipe in where the cat used to be, i did it on my own for kicks, it has-header, no cat, mid muffler, stock rear muffler. hardly louder than stock, very quiet at idle and will let it breath a little better.thats the best cheap alteration to stock exhaust. if you dont care about legal exhaust. im sure others will disagree but whatever, do what you want to do dude

^ I think he's talking about the resonator.

Anyways, what good does just replacing pieces of an exhaust do? Something like that is only as unrestrictive as the most restrictive piece is. You might get better flow but once it hits the muffler, it's restricted again.

yeah the OP was talking about the resonator/ or mid-mufler. asking if it coudl be removed as a cheaper way to get a bit more grunt. i said no. because removing it and only it, is useless. but if he were to leave it all stock as he said he was going to, i told him to remove the catylitic converter...most likely its the original piece, like mine was. probably gunked up and very restrictive. at one time i had removed it and only that from a stock system, a difference could be felt. not drastic but it was a difference and it was free, somthing the OP wanted.and while leaving the rest of the system untouched, it really wasnt too loud at all.basically all im saying is if your goign to take somthing out, make it the cat.
