I am apparently missing something obvious, because nobody is writing exactly how to remove the lower timing cover...

I have the bolts loosened but it's stuck behind the water pump pulley and won't slide out. I don't want to damage or bend it trying to force it out. Do I need to remove the water pump pulley to get the lower timing cover off? It looks like it's literally stuck on one of the 14mm bolts on the water pump.

must slightly remove crank pulley and there is a bolt just behind the lower part of the crank pulley.

I have the crank pulley completely off and all bolts on the lower timing cover off. It's just stuck back there? I can jiggle it free but not completely out.

I think I need to remove the water pump pulley to get it free. That sucks because I have my alternator removed and it looks like most people use the belt to keep the water pump pulley in place while you unbolt it. I'll find a way. ; )

you don't need the belt, just an extra wrench or screwdriver. jam it in between one of the studs and the center of the pulley to hold it in place. piece of cake

and yes. you need to take the pulley off to get the cover out

Yea, water pump pulley is cake to remove and everything just comes right off after that. With that pulley off you don't even have to remove the harmonic balacner or alternator.
