Have any of you removed the sound deadening out of your car?

I need some recommendations specifically on removing the deadening off the rear strut towers and the wheel wells. The stuff doesn't freeze up like the stuff on the floorboards and turns into goo when you try to remove it. It's horrible.

Here is the deadening off the floorboard that we removed with dry ice:

And here are the pics of the goo I was talking about:

Any ideas or recommendations?

Gasoline or paint thinner

That gunk is probaly (definately) a tar based, so the gas will act as a solvent.

BMW has a significant amount of adhesive matting on the majority of the interior body panels surrounding the cabin. Locations are the front firewall, footwells, transmission tunnel (under heater core too), floor pans, rear quarter panels, rear seat bottoms, rear seat back, and rear deck. There may be some in the trunk but I did not find any on mine. The main type of material is a black colored tar mat with varying thickness from 1/16" to 1/8". It will be painted to whatever color your car is. There is also rubber sealant and a thick fiberboard type cardboard substance (portions of floor pan and rear quarter panels).

With all interior and padding removed. Use a medium or light duty torch and a strong metal putty knife to scrape away after heating it until it bubbles. The key is to heat the bond between the metal and the material. Usually the only way to do this is to cook the outer layer. Take caution you do not want to heat up the fuel lines, and the shrink wrapped wiring harnesses scattered throuout. Normally the pan only gets warm to the touch. Once it is clean, the remaining residue can be cleaned up with multiple passes (hint: lots of rags), soaked in your favorate paint thinner. [/quote]

I just used a chissel and putty knife for the whole car...no heat gun or dry ice....it sucked, but the tar on top of the wheel wells is easy to scrap off in 80-90 degree temps with just a putty knife. Here are some ****ty night time pics of what it looks like now...

after scrapping all of the tar off, I got some simple green, warm water, a grill cleaning brush and went to work. Then I decided to do a temporary spray paint job and decided to cut the wiring harness in half and run it in between the body and the skeleton of the car. If anyone wants better pics of this, I can get them tomorrow in the daytime. Good Luck!!
