BMW has a significant amount of adhesive matting on the majority of the interior body panels surrounding the cabin. Locations are the front firewall, footwells, transmission tunnel (under heater core too), floor pans, rear quarter panels, rear seat bottoms, rear seat back, and rear deck. There may be some in the trunk but I did not find any on mine. The main type of material is a black colored tar mat with varying thickness from 1/16" to 1/8". It will be painted to whatever color your car is. There is also rubber sealant and a thick fiberboard type cardboard substance (portions of floor pan and rear quarter panels).
With all interior and padding removed. Use a medium or light duty torch and a strong metal putty knife to scrape away after heating it until it bubbles. The key is to heat the bond between the metal and the material. Usually the only way to do this is to cook the outer layer. Take caution you do not want to heat up the fuel lines, and the shrink wrapped wiring harnesses scattered throuout. Normally the pan only gets warm to the touch. Once it is clean, the remaining residue can be cleaned up with multiple passes (hint: lots of rags), soaked in your favorate paint thinner. [/quote]
