(also in the 240 technical section)

I cant get a good hold on the nipple that screws into the top back end of the exhaust manifold. I think that its a 23mm hex.

Anyone know of a good way to remove it? Do i need a large shaft 23mm wrench or should I have a shop try at it? Low budget (as always) is the key here...

Also can i remove the AIV connection at the bottom of the manifold? It looks kinda like its permanently in there.

dont know what to tell you man. PB blaster rap it a few times let it sit. I used 10" crescent wrench to break it free. As for the AIV... eesh. I had a good grip on it and it stripped anyway. I gave up and hacked it off since i'm installing headers. Maybe heat it and try a steltson wrench. Even if you mangle it you can always eliminate the AIV and get the plug for it.

disclaimer: gumby has no idea what he's talking about ever

oh sorry. its a plumbers pipe wrench. it tightens as you apply pressure. didnt work but i never bothered to heat it. I wouldnt recommend using that on the EGR nipple. Why are you taking the manifold out anyway?

To put in headers, duh. :rolleyes:D j/k

I actually got a set that has EGR and AIV holes built in.I know its kinda rare...But it's a set that has a 2.5" collector before the catalytic converter so its staying for a while.

Do you know where i can get the proper size combo open end/box end wrench for less than $50? Anyone?

yeah, hack the aiv off. concentrate on the EGR. I'm still messing around with disconnecting the steering column. no way that manifold is coming apart. which headers?

I used a decent sized pair of slip-joint pliers. I was able to get it off just fine, and mine was pretty rusted.

ha ha ha I've always taken a big red plumbers pipe wrench for the aiv and egr pipes after I've drowned them to death in pb. lol

I put the headers on between tonight and yesterday.I actually got the EGR nipple off right after i talked to you guys LOL.

The HARD part was getting the same nipple screwed into the new headers' bung pipe. The thread wouldn't catch at all after i bolted up the new headers and i struggled for hours thinking i had a bad set of threads.

It turned out the EGR pipe was bent and i had to disconnect the pipe and entire Intake Mani connection just to get it to screw in. I also lost one of the screws to the intake runner side of my engine... i hope it falls out peacefully...

Also, the OEM exhaust manifold locked up and i had to remove the downpipe with it all in one piece.THAT WAS PAINFUL. Not to mention struggling cursing banging on the ground hard.
