How do you keep the crank from moving when removing the bolt that holds the pulley on? Is there a flywheel lock or something? The FSM just says to remove the pulley but doesn't say how to lock the crank. Any help would be great. Thanks

When I was doing my timing chain, I had the valve cover off, and just stuck my 6" ratchet extension in one of the holes in the cam sprocket and broke it loose against that. Then I kept the bolt in the threads and used a 3-jawed puller to get the pulley off.

you can loan a chain wrench from autozone to hold the pulley while loosening the bolt. I think there is an autozone there on virginia st.

I already have the cam gears off and I tried holding it with the big sprocket for the lower chain but it wouldn't stay put. I'll get a chain wrench tomorrow and try it out. Thanks!

Chain wrench is the best way to go, but there is a little trick I've used a few times that makes getting the bolt off very easy. Put the socket and a long breaker bar on the bolt, and rest the bar against a very sturdy part of the frame (DRIVER'S side, NOT pass side). Remove the injector fuse and then just pop the starter with the key. The crankshaft will turn but the bolt won't. Just pop it for an instant to break torque, then undo the bolt by hand.

*DISCLAIMER*: This is a risky method. If the socket were to pop off at the wrong time or break, it or the breaker bar could fly off and damage something or injure someone. Always use an impact socket for this one. It's crucial you know which way the crank is turning and which side to put the breaker bar on. I haven't had any problems with my starter motor, but I can't guarantee this method won't be detrimental to it. ***Finally, if you don't have a method of keeping the pulley still, you won't be able to torque the bolt on later when you're putting things back together, so you'll need a chain wrench anyway. Starter only turns one way unless you want to jury-rig it, but that's dangerous and you won't know how much torque you're putting into it.

dont use the breaker bar method if you already have the cam gear off dont wanna bend valves.

Uh yeah, that should have been in the disclaimer too. Thanks for the vigilence Nistech!

I assumed the starter motor could be rewired to reverse the polarity and drive it backward--simply touching a 12ga wire to a battery for just an instant or 2. Don't know if this would damage anything though.
