Has anyone done this before and if so how hard was it? Do I need any special tools?

Its not a big deal if I remember. There are bolts down in the bottom of the C pillar area, but there are some they warn to NOT loosen. Of course the electrical connectors will have to be dealt with.
Let me look at something and I'll get back.

OK, I dug out my 1992 Convertible supplement. Looks like you will have to get all the rear quarter trim out, and the back seat as well. You will have to deal with the hydraulic cylinders and mess in the trunk. Not super easy but could be worth it for nice top or other hard to find parts. Oh yeah, there is a little by-pass valve on the hydraulic pump that can be opened to allow movement of the top if the battery is dead on the donor car.
