I'm trying to remove the hinged door above the console, where I plan to put a Garmin NAV unit. To do it, I need to remove the cover to get into the door, so I can put the mount in permanently. Anyone know how that door is removed? There must be a trick to it.

It's a 2006 G35 coupe.

Thanks

Not sure...I was thinking of doing this myself. Are you going to run a power wire inside the console?

Well, I got to it last night. What I did was use a Garmin 750 wide screen, and modified the suction cup mount: I cut the ball off with a hacksaw, drilled and tapped (10-32) the ball.

Using a strip of thin sheet metal, about 1 in. x 3 in. I positioned the ball onto the sheet metal, not center, but below center, and with double faced tape, placed it into the cubby hole, attaching it to the lid.

It worked pretty well. The cubby opens and closes with the GPS attached, with very little interference.

So, now I am going to drill a small hole into the bottom of the compartment. The plan is to put two wires thru it, then place a cigarette lighter socket inside the cubby, which I will attach the cig lighter cord onto - then on the GPS adapter.

The two wires will then go into the factory cig lighter wiring behind the console.

I will post pictures as I go if anyone is interested.

The good news is, the Garmin fits nicely in that cubby. The wiring is yet to be determined, but it should be fairly simple.

Well, it's not done yet, but here is the "draft":

OK, you asked for it. I got it nailed down to a ten minute installation for the coupe, and it costs less than $200. Installing a NAV into your car doesn't get much simpler than this. Here is the PDF link which you can print:

Anybody can install it this way. I eliminated the "wired-in" instruction since that gets pretty involved and really, it works great this way.
