I got a random set of chrome rims with my 240, and the chrome on all of them is bubbled and peeling. I'm not making these permanent rims, but I'm going to use them for a while until I get a new set. So I want to try and dechrome all of these and just paint them black or a gun metal paint I picked up. How should I go about doing this? My cousin's husband actually does chroming for a living but I haven't got ahold of him, and I don't really want to spend the money to get it dechromed by a pro.

im no expert... and this is just a stab in the dark man, but belt sander/ sandblast? not sure what that will do the aluminum underneath though.....

prolly best to wait for someone else to chime in if you like em at all. but if i just didnt care and they were my wheels, thats what i would do.

Just sand it down to the bare metal. The lower the grit (i.e. 200 grit) on the sand paper, the easier it will be to strip if off. Afterwards, smoothen it out with a higher grit (i.e. 800 or something), then prime and paint.

Sorry to revive a dead thread... but how did this turn out for you? I found a set of wheels I want on craigslist... but they're chromed out

Was thinking of doing something similar, ie. stripping it of its chrome, then painting.

I wouldn't touch wheels with pitted chrome. Chrome shops can de-chrome them properly. I had a set blasted without good luck. Chrome is VERY hard and would be a mother to sand off.

I have some cheap wheels with some flaky chromelike finish that is peeling of. I'm going to put the centers in the blaster tomorrow at work and see what happens.

Pics will be had.
