Can one remove the cams without removing the timing covers. I looked in the service manual and all I see is that the timing covers are off at the same time. How would one apply the correct tension to the timing chain when removing the sprockets?

I want to do this because I believe on or more of the HLA's in the engine are clogged or full of air. I also need to replace the leaking engine oil pressure switch so that's a good time to read oil pressure.

I assume this is a very insane question, that's why I got no response. But I have yet to take of the left side valve cover so I have no idea if a HLA is bad. I just know that there is a ticking noise from the rear left valve cover. Its always there but the noise is greater when cold. And the noise nearly goes away when warm. But the noise can still be heard when warm with a mechanics stethoscope.
