I need to remove the oil pan on a '95 240SX and have the hoist but not sure what these "slingers" are that are mentioned in the Service Manual...

Are they specific to this car/engine? Are they ABSOLUTELY necessary? If so, where to buy/rent?

If not needed, how do you hook/support the engine?

Thanks for the input!

I pulled my engine and I never used anything called a slinger, I don't even know what one is. If you have a hoist and some chains you are good to go.

It is a tab with a hole in it that you hook up chains or webbing to that bolts into the side of the engine. But its not really nesesary as long as you only attach stuff to the head or block. Do not use the intake manifold.

Cool...didn't want to spend all weekend lookin' for 'em!

Now a follow-up:

Where (especially on the left/passenger side) do I grab the block? Since the exhaust manifold is cast iron, is it safe to wrap chain around cyl #2 & 3?For the Intake side, do I get an longer bolt for the upper-center bolt (located between intake runners for cycl's #2 & 3)?

I've removed quite a few Small-Block Chevy engines, in which a longer bolt into opposite corners of the heads always did the trick, but this engine seems a bit more cramped and clustered!!!

Thanks again!

Its fine if you use some that are connected to the head indirectly, but do not connect to the intake plenum side at all. If you are removing the engine while it is connected to the transmission, you should connect toward the front of the engine so the whold thing will tip out of the engine compartment and will be easy to remove in one try.

Thanks for the replies...and good tip about front bolts (not sure if entire thing is coming out just yet...if I can get the pan off w/ it suspended a bit and front suspension dropped, THAT'S ALL I'M DOIN'!)

Well, just so you know, its always easier to remove the whole engine, because you can work on it from any angle you want without having anything in your way. And if you have it out for that kinda service, i would check a buncha other stuff like timing chain and front/rear oil seal. The parts are cheap and almost require you to remove the engine as well.
