Well, guess I'm new here! Hi yall. After about 2 years of searching I finally got my 240. its a 1990 hatch. ok but i always wanted the 91-93 coupes. great car anyway. now the question: the stock spoiler that comes with the 240sx fastback is starting to crack and fall apart. Upon closer inspection the underside of it, where it connects to the rear trunk life is starting to rust. I want to remove it, because I think leaving it there will hurt the body later on. Anyone got any idea where to start to remove the spoiler?

Having a bad day are we?

The spoiler is bolted through the deck of the hatch. You will have to pop off the inner plastic panels to see the nuts/bolts. The panels have little plastic grommets on them that simply hold them by friction. A good firm tug should free the panels. Don't pull too hard though.

As always, when dealing with a Grommet, watch out for the accompanying Wallace.........

ok this is coming from a fellow hatch owner. Taking off the spoiler is pretty easy. There is a carpet like panel on the underside of the hatch. There are these little things that almost look like buttons. push the center in and the should lossen and fall out. It will also be tucked into the inside window molding. Just pull it out. Now the fun part. Unbolt i believe 5? 10mm? bolts that hold the wing on. Now there is alos these plastic things that hold it on aswelll as some double sided tape. Just carefully pull the wing off minding these two things. I pulled my off not knowing this and I made the rusted holes 10x bigger. Are you planning on having a body shop fill in the holes?

Yeah, the holes are fricking huge! So big you cant fill them with bondo. you have to have them welded or use fiberglass to cover them up.

yeah I wouldnt pull the spoiler off if I were you... the hatch is going to rust anyways (or it already has). Just instead of a spoiler rusting out your hatch, you will have 2 holes (probably duct taped) leaking water into your trunk and rusting your spare tire well.

Let the bugger rust, go buy a spoilerless hatch at a junkyard or elsewhere (~$150), and then replace the whole thing. Take it from someone who's been there and done that. Yup that's right... I'm not only posting in this thread, I'm a rusty hatch survivor as well.

Good luck man ;)

hehe, i pulled mine off before the hatch started rusting. There were actually 10 holes left over. Guess Nissan didnt want that thing to fall off. EVER.

this is what mine looked like before I replaced the whole hatch... I think mine was especially bad, but you can see what I mean about how pulling the spoiler might not exactly solve the problem:

yep. sweet. After i took the nuts off the metal mounts actually disintegrated so I never figured out what they actually looked like.

This is what they should look like.

I'm dreading to take off mine. No leaks in the trunk and now working on my project 240. It has the same problem 2 however. Going to make that hatch plexiglass though to save some weight.Might just cut and put back or build a new hatch frame. I know how to weld an dcan get to abotu 5 of them pretty easy, just planning to weld under the holes and then drill my new holes then paint.
