I have a 93 fastback that started making noise coming home from Napa. Sounded like some tapping/slashing noise coming from the valves. Drove home with the noise, after that, pulled the valve cover. I found out that the upper timing chain cover, not the guide but the bridge between the cams (held by 2 12mm bolts), broke off. The cover was just resting on the chain, inspected everything, didnt see much damage except for that cover. Is it safe to keep it off like how i have it right now? If not, then i guess i'd better buy another one from the dealer......

Just take the guide off. They don't even make the part anymore cause it's useless.

leaving the cover off will result in oil being slung through out the engine bay. But if you can live with that...

not that cover. He means the guide that sits on top of the cam chains.
