I have an 89 240sx and I'm trying to replace the shift knob but i cant seem to get it off. Most cars seem to just screw off but the 240 is a pain in the a**. Does anyone know how to remove it? Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

LOL I thought that i was the only person with an 89' 240 that couldnt get the shift knob off. I wanted to use my original stock shift knob instead of the one that came with my RB20 for a more sleeper/subtle look but couldnt get that P.O.S. off. Anyone else out there have this prob also? I would love to find out how to remove it also...

I just posted a thread a few days ago on the 240sx site about this. Basically ,just get a long handled pair of pliers and have at it. I've decided to leave mine on for a while longer. Nothing wrong with it so until it starts to fall apart it's staying put! Some people said their's came off easy..others said it was a bear to get off...

i actually passed by a nissan dealer one day and decided that i had enough free time to ask. the car i had was a nissan 200sx. the guy said that when they put the stock shift knobs on they machine screw them so it is a pain in the balls. my advice is to use vice grips and such to unscrew it.

I have a 1990 240...is it the same thing? I swear if I twist that knob again I'm going to break the shifter itself. I need to replace the boot since I have already ripped that to hell

I have even talked to a few mechanics and some auto parts guys...had them give it a try...sure enough, they failed as well.

So, I decided today to see if the vise grips work...They do, but make sure you are gonna replace it, because I kinda ruined the knob in the process. but it takes a while to actually get it going and you're able to do it by hand.

If it's really that hard to get off, just wrap it in a towel (only if you don't want to damage it) then grab it with vice grips/channel locks whatever and TWIST!!!

Just remember turn it CCW to loosen it.
