I set the crank to TDC and removed the head to replace its gasket. The timing chain cut through its guide so I also need to remove the crank bolt for replacement and inspect the cover for damage. I have an electric impact wrench and a breaker bar. I know I can put the car in 5th gear with the parking brake on. If it moves can I simply rotate the crank to set it back to TDC afterward? I'd like to keep the timing in synch for reassembly.

Jam a wedge down in there to keep the chain from shifting around.

but... the chain is coming off completely. I need to keep the crankshaft in its current position so it'll match up with the camshaft when the new chain is installed.

I've read that I can remove the starter and jam a piece of wood in the flywheel teeth. Is there another option here?

Nevermind I just rotated the crankshaft back into TDC position after it moved while loosening the bolt. Should be close enough to match the new chain.
