Removal of transponder chip in key

I'm interested in buying one of those flip-type key fobs and found one on eBay that has a specific compartment for the transponder chip to be transferred to. Has anyone here ever removed their transponder chip from their key(s)? If so, how did you do it without damaging the key or the chip? I tried using a blade to pry the plastic cover that is housing the chip off, but gave up in fear that I may damage it beyond repair. Please chime in if anyone has had experience with this...
