Thinking about asking for a remote starter for Christmas. My wife is always searching for a decent idea for a present... so, I think this might be a good one.

Any suggestions on brand, price range, DIY or pofessional install, and if done by a pro do you recommend any place in particular?

Accumulators might be just a little bit outside the normal price range for Christmas gifts from my wife.

Let me get the car running reliably and up to your standards, then I will start searching for the money to begin restoring the Active.

Get pro installed unless you're very comfortable with wiring. Somewhere on here I posted my experiences. Generally you should find an installer first - ask for reccomendations from local BMW/Mercedes/Lexus/Infiniti dealerships. Once you've found someone you can trust (and you must have very, very good faith in them, because they could roast your car), ask them which brand they use. Usually they use one brand exclusively and they are familiar with it.

Check out http://www.autopageusa.com I have a RS855 LCD and it kicks butt. It opens my trunk, opens the gas door and remote starts the car. The pager is also very cool, great range and great battery life.

Do you have it on your Q or another vehicle. How much to buy? to install?

Thanks

I am very, very happy with my Viper 550ESP which appears to have been superceded with the Viper 560XV. http://www.viper.com/security/...s.asp

It has been extremely reliable - not one glitch that I can remember - and the remote range is phenominal. I once started Q2 from the 16th floor of a hotel a half a block away from the building. I barely had visual contact with her.

I installed mine myself - but as Robert mentioned, don't try this at home unless you have a lot of time and are very comfortable with the work. I spent a week or so installing mine. It's buried so deep you'd never find it unless you're a very good thief. Everything is soldered and integrated into the existing wiring harnesses...

Mine's the same way, but I didn't bother with the alarm (160xv instead). I figure if someone wants my car that bad they can have it....

I have the CrimeStopper II. It was $290 installed back in 2003 with remote start and keyless. The remote has a switch so you can toggle between cars. I use it as an on/off. Its been completely reliable and the range is fantastic. Downstairs in my room, which is in the center of the house with no windows, I can start my Q sitting in the street. It has options for trunk release and the gas door and blinkers and such, but I didnt get them because they seemed pointless.

Most of the $290 was for installation.

Auto theft, or auto related theft/vandalism, is not really a big issue for me. I park in my garage in a very quiet neighborhood. I can't remember anyone ever having a car broken in to near me... so, I don't think I need the alarm.

So, if I just wanted to do a remote starter without the theft deterence, what would you recommend?
