Recently my room mates car was broken into in front of our building, so I thought it was time to get an alarm. I went with the viper 791XV. I took it to a local shop and they charged me originally 295 to install it with remote start and to hook up an extra siren. I got a call the next day saying that they can not do the remote start. Apparently they tried to hook it up and it unprogrammed my keys, so they took it to nissan and had it reprogrammed. I would still like to have this feature and I am asking if anyone else has it done and which remote start bypass module did you use. I am considering taking my car to another shop just to get the remote start feature working.

your local installer is incompetent... I;ve had my remote start put in my car for about 9 months now.. and they didn't erase my fobs, and I didn't have to give up a fob also... the 791XV is a pretty good unit (now at least... they had to recall them ALL last year due to shieling and interference issues)

don;t go back to that shop, look up a few more shops and ask them if they've done a 2007-2008 altima... that way you won't end up a guinea pig again..

so yes it can be done, but again, the people at that shop are below average-border line incompetent installers!

Doc, I'm loving your praise of that shop.

Anyway, Doc isn't the only one with a remote start on his Alti. I don't have one, but I know it is possible. Definitely find another shop that can do this. I know it's significantly more difficult on newer cars (I had remote start on an older '96 Accord that was an easy install), but it can certainly be done!

but dude, think about it... these guys almost pulled a Best Buy install on his car.... they were obviously learning when they did this, and experimenting on his car, and didn't tell him that they had NO knowledge on how to do this install on a vehicle with push button and intelli key

I'm pissed because they could have seriously damaged this guys vehicle... and rather than just say I don't know in the beginning, they decided to get some on the job training with his car...

Seriously, this install is NOT difficult at all if you are an experienced car alarm installer.... I'm more upsetr with what COULD have happened to this guy's car...

I understand your frustration entirely. I'm glad that nothing horrible happened to the car. I definitely wish more people would be honest and let you know that they don't think they can accomplish your install or that they don't feel comfortable doing it, rather than just taking the money that is being offered to them and winging it. But, I guess with the economy being a bit tight I can understand why they wouldn't do this. Just one more reason why I like to do all my own install work. I've never used a shop, so there's no one else I trust. At least I know that when I go to work on something, I'll research it until I can get it right. If I can't get it right, I wont even bother trying.

Although, I'm a bit confused as to how they unprogrammed the keys. If this happened, I'm not sure how they got the car to Nissan since it shouldn't have started. Maybe I'm missing something here though...

If the installation was "partially" complete and the car was not 100% put back together then the keys can be unprogrammed. I am in CT and another shop in Fl called me to ask why it happened to them. When installing on an 07+ Altima/FX/G/M with the push to start the instrument cluster must be removed to get at most of the wiring that is needed for CORRECT installation of a remote start system. These guys moved the car with the cluster out and when the car was shut off it would not start again. I told them that I hope they know someone at Nissan because that was just stupid. Again to help others out it is VERYVERY hard to find honest installers. I happen to be one but I also had to close up my shop cause it is all about the money. Some people are still way more concerned about what they pay not the quality of the work. I was never out to get anyone but at the same time I cannot make everyone happy. Also in regards to "guessing" at the install. They should have never taken on the job but 2 years agao I was honest with the dealer and had the 1st M that was push button start. We got it done but it took 2 days. Now all is good

they got the car back to me in one piece and it all works fine now. except no remote start. I am going to call around later this week. They also knocked some money off the price that I paid.

Wow, this is just incredible. Not only is this unsafe, it could've potentially damaged your car. Beyond that, I wouldn't want ANYONE driving my car. If I bring a car to you for work, it is not your right to drive it around as you see fit. My thought would've been that if they jacked it up (in terms of the keys), then it's time to flatbed it over to a dealer.

I'm glad your car came back to you in one piece, but I would go over it with a fine-toothed comb. If they were this irresponsible about one thing, who knows what else they did.

I agree. Go over the car. It would be a shame if something else went wrong because of them. I had only 1 issue in 15yrs. My friends were around, people were laughing, it was my friends mothers BRAND NEW car, and I drilled threw the brake booster. This happened about 8 yrs ago. I couldn't have been more disgusted. BUT regardless of it being my friends mom's car the 1st option was to have it towed. That is why we "should have" good insurace. Accidents do and always will happen but they way your car was handled was 100% inappropriate.
