Hi, this is first post.I've been searching for awhile every since I was interested in getting a Y33. my question is to all that have a remote start on there car. I'm looking into the viper 791XV{that is the one with remote start and 2 way pager}I know that the y33 is hard to start sometimes, will this effect the remote start from starting the car?

I've had remote start on a 90Q since around 1995, no problems from the remote starter yet. I'm using a viper alarm with remote start, I did have the system replaced under warranty when the backup battery in the alarm died in 2002. If the car doesn't start the first time, it will try again before it times out.

My 97 Q45 is not hard to start it just turns several revolutions longer than any other fuel-injected car I've driven. I would think that the remote start would be unaffected by this-it doesn't car how many turns the engine makes to start (as long as it isn't 30 seconds). Also, my car has never failed to start which probably would affect the remote starter although they (Viper) must consider this in their technology.

I just had viper 791XV installed in my y33. And from witnessing first hand it's not an easy install. I still have to take it back b/c the unlock button on the viper only unlocks the drivers door and not the rest. Something about the cars system being a double pulse. My advice is take it to a shop that has dealt with an Infiniti before and not just a "normal" Nissan. But as for the remote start I love it, it cranks up with no problem. I don't know about other year y33's but the 97 requires a bypass switch, (meaning you have to cough up one of your ignition keys to make the remote start work.) Without it the remote start won't work.

The Y33s did have a problem like that, if yo uput the throttle open at 3/4 or so while cranking it will help... Something about adding too much fuel during startup...

Pretty much all newer remote start alarms have several options on how they start and monitor the car.

1. Tach sensing. This is the best way as there is no doubt to the alarm that the engine did start.

2. Voltage sensing. This is easier to install because you don't have to locate a suitable tach signal. Not as reliable on some cars. The reason is that it has to notice an increase in voltage and if your battery is in really good shape and holds a high charge, the alarm can't tell when it starts because the voltage didn't increase enough.

You can also adjust the crank time to a set amount. If you know it always takes 5 seconds of cranking to fire up you can set it for that, or some preset time close to that. By default, it will crank for a couple seconds and check to see if it started, if not it will crank for a couple seconds longer, and so on until it starts. It will usually try about 3-4 times.

bumping this thread back to the top

Was wondering around how much I should pay for a viper remote start ... and if you can install it urself, or if its best to take it somewhere.... and where would that be if that's the case or how hard would it be to do urself? ... sorry for all the ?'s ... my ignition key lock thing is getting frustrating as it just started acting up and this seems like a simple cure that would also be enjoyable.

For starters, I just posted to a similar question on another thread in the audio and security section.

zerothread/194782

Now, I'm not sure what you mean by you "...my ignition key lock thing is getting frustrating..." With a remote start you still have to use the ignition key when you drive. If you don't put the key in the car will die when, 1) you step on the brake or 2) On most systems, when the RPM's rise above a set point (around 2-3K). Plus your steering wheel will still be locked. If this isn't what you meant please explain.

Read through that other thread and repost if you still have questions.

maybe remote start isn't what I mean

... the frustrating thing I'm talking about is the ignition (where you stick the key in to start the car) is messed up ... Like i can get the key in there, but then it won't turn whatsoever and you have to like jiggle back and forth all sorts of angles and what not and get blisters on ur thumb from trying to turn the key while turning the steering wheel back and forth and lifting up (in motion) on the key while again turning the key ... all at the same time. It worked for a lil while ... and now I just simply can't start my car.

I had to get my lil brother to run me to my g-rents to borrow their truck to get to school and work today and don't know what to do about the q45 ... its like everytime I get someone lined up to buy it ... it wants to act up .. and as soon as that buyer has moved onto somethin else ... it fixes itself. I don't think she wants me to get rid of her.

So onto what I mean by remote start ... I need something that'll somehow bypass "turning a key to the 'ON' position to start the car" and unlock the steering wheel (as if i had inserted the key and turned the engine over) for my ease and also for the buyer of the car ... or right now I'm trying to source a new ignition so that I might be able to just replace that and it work properly ... I've read in another thread (don't remember how recent it was) that for infiniti to fix the problem it was going to be like $800-1200+ ... so I'm trying to get out of it as easy as possible while still satisfying myself and potential buyers ... cause I seriously have a blister on my thumb about as big as a quarter.

Let me know if that clarifies what I mean a lil bit more

Thanks,Scott

First thing i would try is getting a new key cut, if that doesnt fix it then get a new ignition switch.

well I dunno if this helps or is relevant... but I have 4 keys for this car (2 masters, 2 valets) that came with the car ... I've only used one master mainly (unless i couldn't find my keys and just had to grab the other) and I used the valets when i first got the car (3 yrs ago?) and they worked ... I tried using a valet key ... and it doesn't work. seems like to me the valet key would be preserved/unharmed or in good condition still ... what is this graphite powder ppl talk about and what not that might help?

You can get a new key cut for about $50. I had a similar problem with my 91 and the new key cut solved the problem. Nissan locking cylinders both on ignition and doors notoriously have problems with wear on the tumblers. The reason that your other three "mint" keys don't work is because they haven't worn with the tumblers as your "main" key. Any locksmith should be able to help you correct your problem.
