Remote reprogram question

I've tried a couple different ways to reprogram and it doesn't seem to work. How do you tell if the remote actually works? I used the one on the site here and I found a couple different ways I found elsewhere. Is there a time factor with any of the other steps (other than the 6+ times of removing the key in 10 secs)? I saw one where you open the trunk. Do you close it again? I also see that it says close and lock all the doors. Do you start with them all open? I may be really reading into it but the problem is I can't tell how touchy it would be to do each step. The passenger door will not lock with the power lock (it seems to try) would this have an effect? thanks! Oh, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but the previous owner had a "repair" that disconnected the clock fuse (according to records) for a battery drain and it seems to have diconnected all power off memory (radio and climate control).
