I am currently collecting parts for my RB26 into S15 project and come across an idea that I would like to use. I would like to mount my radiator in the rear of the car. However, I have not found any information that would show me how to do this or what extra equipment I might need. Anyone got any ideas or seen this done before?

wow... with radiator hoses that long, you might not even need a radiator.

When I was looking at the pictures I was thinking about chasis mods. Would you have to cut the floor for something like that? or would some hardcore fanse and a vented trunk be enough?

Kumakubo has a new rear wheel drive STI. It has a remote mount radiator, designed to pull in air while keepin it sideways. I can't actually find any pics of the actual radiator setup inside the car. This beast has 500+ horses!

Here's a link to a video that briefly shows the inside setup. When you first click on it, it shows advertisements for about the first 20 seconds. Hope it gives you some ideas.

Thanks for the link. I actually was able to formulate some sort of a mental picture of what I might want to do with an S15 just from looking at that and the weld car. I have two ideas thus far.

1) Vent the rear and top of my trunk. Modify the trunk floor to sink my radiator into it about 2-4 inches from where tail lights are mounted. Cutting extra material from the trunk floor (to allow for the entire radiator to get covered I can make a duct that leads to the top of the trunk lid. Put a strong set of Electric push fans on the radiator that would push air through the radiator and out the back vent.

2) do a set up similar to JUN's in the video but instead door intakes I can fabricate them into the side kind of similar to vents found on ferrari's and such, just not so gaudy.

There are some other ideas but I have to do soem more reasearch to figure out if any of them would even be efficient enough.

Why not just move your engine back into your firewall like 3-4 inches. There would be more than enouf room for your radiator and you would get way better balance with your car. I am going with a dry sump so i have to redo my oil pan anyways so its no big deal for me. my fuel cell and bat are going in my trunk.

I thought about that option but I later on decided that I liked the idea of moving it to the rear more.

lay it flat down in the trunk, cut a hole in the trunk floor, build a scoop PUT A GRILL ON IT LEST YOU SUCK A DEAD CAT INTO YOUR RADIATOR! Shroud the radiator and vent it out between the tallights.

That was my first idea if you were there when me and Tom were first talking about this, but I wanted to explore some other options. After you brought up using a fuel cell today I realized it was probably the best option as well. Now will a N1 pump be enough to keep the circulation going or should I go with an electric water pump?

It would seem that even a stock pump would be fine. Any mid-engined car has the same setup but in reverse.

It couldn't hurt to throw a pressure gauge in the system to make sure. But yeah, the MR2 for example has the engine in the back and the radiator in the front and does fine.

One less thing to go bad if you go with an electric one. Its not like you wont have room. I have a n1 pump also for my swap. A stock one will cavitate and thats no good. You need to move fluid because your hoses will be soo long.

Yeah, but when the electric one goes, it gives no warning. With the mechanical pump (pressure gauge was a good idea by the way) you'll notice a drop-off in performance or leaking when it's time to replace it. The electric pump is also going to put more strain on the stock alternator. Combine that with the electric fans I'm sure you'll need to run. Something to consider.

With a built engine or one turning more rpm's it would be nice to romove one thing off the belt. Thats what the fancy guages and warning lights are for.

I like the idea of putting a pressure gauge in the system. I have been considering using the N1 pump (does nto produce cavitation) and using an inline water pump in order to boost the pressure up for the distance the coolant has to travel. I am not sure yet because all of this is basically in theory right now since I am still accumulating parts for it all. I can say that I am using an intercooler that is thick enough to make me absolutelty want to move the radiator to the rear.

Move the radiator. That would be crazy. I have never seen it done in a rb swap. I want to see how this works out for you.

Me too. It will be a while though, The engine alone is running me clse to 25K so I am going to be moving kind of slow.

B, how many GPH does the engine-mounted water pump move? In my research on air-water intercooling I have found a few marine bilge pumps that move decent amounts of water and can run continuously.

The good rb26 parts are not cheap.

I don't know how much in volume it moves. I am pretty sure I can find out though.
