My keyless entry remote seems to work whenever it wants to. I've changed batteries and reprogrammed but stil doesn't work all the time. I don't even know if my car has a stock alarm or if it works although i think it did go off one time? So i'm in the market for a new remote and winter is coming also so i thought a remote car starter would be nice. I did some looking around and i want a remote that has keyless entry, remote car starter, trunk popper, and buttom to for my alarm if i even have one? So my question is do any of you guys have remotes with all this, or remote car starters? Even ideas of some good brands would be helpful. My car is a 97 Q if that helps at all. Thanks

I do on another car. DEI is pretty dominant and pretty good.

About $700 for my turnkey installation at Car Toys.

I once thought of adding a super fancy aftermarket security system/remote start but the thought of someone cutting/adding wiring to the already complex Q wiring/LAN system made me think it may not be a good idea.

All the additional wiring/relays/gizmos that are added create a nightmare later down the road whenever the car develops an electrical problem and a tech needs to troubleshoot, as you can no longer just follow the factory service manual to diagnose. To make matters worse, most alarm installers do not leave blueprints of the system with the cars owner for future use.

Search my post "nightmare of Q45 street". I tried to add that to my car, but they totally screwed my car up. I snatched it back off and I just have factory alarm system. A easy way to see if your alarm work is to let down your driver's window you can reach in after you get out of your car. Lock your door and wait about 2mins so the alarm can engage. Then reach in and unlock the door. That should set off the alarm. Then either use you key or remote to turn the alarm off.

That's why I haven't done it to my Q45. On alarms, it's all about the installer and his experience. Try to go low bidder and you will get burned.

I don't want any security system though or alarm. I'm just saying if my car has a stock alarm that works then id like the remote i want to have a button on it for the alarm, that's all. I'm not looking for any additional security regardless of if mine is still working or not. Im mainly just looking for a good brand remote car starter that has those extra buttons on it for those things i named earlier.

Go visit the best car stereo shop in your town{an independant, NOT Best Buy/Circuit City, etc} and get a quote and see if it is worth exchanging the dollars asked for the remote start feature you seek.

I think it would be worth it around here because winter can get bad sometimes. Also it be nice to have the car warm and ice off the windshield so im not late for work or school in the morning. But i also though about do i really want to drive my car in the winter or get a beater vehicle. Then i really wouldnt need the remote starter. I called a local auto electronic shop but they rip everyone off bc there the only one in town. Many dumb asses buy there **** not knowing what there doing. They told me $280 installed just for a remote starter. I found what i believe is a good starter on the net for $60, just wondering how hard to wire in a remote starter.

I have done it on my Q and it's a pretty complex installation if done correctly. You have to splice into the starter wires, brake circuit, tachometer, constant 12v, switched 12v, etc. On your '97 you would need to deal with the chipped key (or lack of it being there during the remote start) It took me a couple of days.

If you are very comfortable with automotive electrical systems, you will be fine - but it's not a step x step deal that we can walk you though here. You need to have some knowledge about electrical systems.

So it's not a completely bad idea? It's been getting colder out here and I'd love a remote starter.

Would someone with electrician's training and an FSM be able to handle it?

I think it's a great idea if installed correctly. If you have a friend with automotive electronics experience and the FSM it should be fine. If you're paying someone to do it I would look for the best alarm installer in your area...
