Yeah I did love the Mazda3. Even added a few extras to it, 15% Tint, Injen Intake, Eibach Springs. I loved the color too, and the fact that it was a manual transmission. It had the practicality that I needed, but keep in mind I had just come from the Q... a very modified Q. With the Eibach springs the Mazda handled like a dream and had the perfect stance.
But when it came to overall performance, I missed the Q badly. The GTI came into play because I was working for a VW/Infiniti/BMW dealership. It was the year end and the '07 GTI's had just rolled in. On top of that VW had special rebates and interest rates for employee's only. My boss told me about the employee deals, and then I asked (just out of curiosity) what they could do for me to get me out of the Mazda3 -- especially after only owning it for 3 months.
He turned around and gave me over BLUE book for my Mazda3, and then with the employee rebate I could have owned the White GTI for $100 more than what I was paying on the GTI. But then he told me about the Tornado Red '06 that had been sitting on the showroom floor for some time right across from my desk, undriven. He said that since it's an '06, it qualifies for the '06 model year closeout discount + the employee rebate + the lower interest rates, and he could also still give me above book for my Mazda. Then I looked at insurance rates, and was blown away to find out that my insurance would be $93 per month vs. $221 on the Mazda with the same coverages. Also, the Red GTI had the DSG transmission instead of the 6-speed manual. If you know anything about DSG or have ever driven one, you'd be blown away.. DSG is an extra $1500 option but didn't factor in because of all the discounts.
Anyway I went with the Red GTI and I'm now paying out $246 less per month (including insurance) on a 4 year loan (vs. 5 years with the Mazda), and driving a car that gives me the combination of power, handling, and even more of a fun factor that I've missed since the Q. I've recently added the APR Chip which bumps the power up to 252hp/303tq. This car is a monster right now. It still gives me the practicality I needed when my Grandparents need to get around because the seats fold forward far enough for extremely easy access to the back seats. Perfect car for me.
