no, chances are your mechanic didnt gain any power at all, and from what my chevy mechanic uncle always said back in the day, blocking the EGR on those Chevy motors would burn holes right through pistons, he said mainly the ****ty-*** 2.5 but it happened to to others too.
on your KA we know for a fact that you'll be all good if you don't have the EGR, no holes burned through pistons
however, the EGR is shut when you're at WOT anyways so when you're flooring it trying to actually make power the EGR unless its stuck open, doesnt make any difference
all you're gonna do by removing is help polute iowa, which i'm totally down with.
all you have to do is make a little plate that will bolt to the location the EGR used to sit on the intake manifold, or make a plate that bolts on to where the tube went on the EGR. a nickle can be used to block the tube on the other side, just cut the tube off and re-use the fitting
you aren't going to make any power though, this modification is only good for drivability under part throttle (which i guess you could say is more power).
and try not to call your exhaust manifold a "headers" it causes me to laugh at you
