some kits come with weldable flanges for return, and some dont... you don't HAVE to weld the return flange but it is the safest way.

if you kit comes with a copper return flange like most do, then go to home deopt get some weldable pipe that is the same diameter as the flange you were given and then take that pipe (after you cut it the way you want) and your oil pan to a welding shop and have them weld it for you. it should take no more than 5 minutes or less for a professional welder to do it for you. if you have a trade school anywhere around you you could probably have them do it for free for practice work or whatever.
