Does anyone have a source for a reliable RE4R01A transmission?

I tried a reman, it failed in short order as did their warranty replacement. I tried 2 junkyard transmissions that did not work. It does not appear possible to find a used RE4R01A that is tested good, at least in the southeast USA. I've heard over and over that the transmission is what finally kills the truck. Folks, be smart and sell at the first sign of a failing transmission.

Aside from the transmission my Pathfinder is in great shape. :) I wasn't near ready to part with it but it looks like the end of life if I can't source a transmission. The transmission shop I'm dealing with thinks they'll not be able to get the parts to rebuild and it'll easily cost $3500+, so they recommend against trying and I have to agree.

Yeah... New parts are practically all discontinued for the transmission and no aftermarket alternatives I am aware of. This is sad to hear. :frown:

Based on what you wrote it sounds like you've replaced the AT four times already and still no success? Over how long a period of time are you talking about? I still see complete rebuild kits available from suppliers like Raybestos. I also know there's reman's available from domestic suppliers at a reasonable price:

That said, it's the labor intensive process of R&R that's the killer. I have 180K miles on mine and to date, no leaks, no slippage, no really hard shifts. If it goes out while I still have it, I couldn't cost justify a replacement since I would have to pay a shop to do the job.

The reviews for SPPrecision I've found are mostly negative. I would not trust them. A transmission from them would need to be shipped via freight from MN and then installed. If it does not work it'll have to be removed from the truck, packed and shipped back via a freight carrier. There is a lot of trouble and expense involved and it'll be a big fight trying to get a refund. I've been down this road and it is not worth the possible hassle.

I'll ask my transmission guy about the Raybestos kit. It is mostly gaskets and seals and I wonder if it has all of the parts that would be necessary to fix a failed transmission.

That transmission was used in hundreds of thousands of US Nissan vehicles so its odd that the rebuild kit would be so scarce. In any case you are right about the risk and expense involved in trusting a rebuilt unit. I guess even if you use a transmission expert locally you trust, the total R&R cost will still be a mere fraction of buying a replacement vehicle - assuming the rest of the car is in good shape.
