Reliable mechanic needed

I have a 1990 240sx that needs some engine work. The engine runs extremely hot and rattles. I've been told it probably is the valves and the pistons are stuck. I live in the lower Hudson Valley area of NY and I'm hoping someone here can direct me to a reliable excellent mechanic I can have confirm and fix whatever is wrong. A friend talked to a mechanic at the local Nissan dealership who suggested putting a whole new engine in the car... and said he "does his own work on the side" and would look at the car. I think the guy is just seeing $ after hearing what could be wrong and wants to have it himself rather than the dealership, and who's to say he would do quality work and not put crap back in the car.I love the car and don't want to do any more damage to it or ditch it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Could be a whole slew of things. Or could be time for a new engine or just a rebuild.
