This might sound a little dumb, but a friend of mine has a 92 maxima(auto), and there is a release knob at the bottom of the "stick", you have to press it down to take the car out of park. He never had to do that until recently, and he says it is a pain in the ***. If anyone knows how to disable this or anything please post, thanks in advance.

actually it sounds like his shift interlock relay has become non functional. has something been spilled around the shifter by chance? if so you need to get to the solonoid mounted at the base of the shifter to clean/replace it. the red button he is pushing is the fail safe system. that button manually pushes the lever the solonoid is suppose to be pushing when you step on the brake. you dissable that he will find him self forever in park.
