Relay? clicking noise coming from center console

Hi all, new guy here.I've looked through the site and found a bunch of useful information, but haven't seen anything about this:Sometimes while I'm driving I can hear a what I think is a mechanical relay of some sort doing its thing randomly. Sometime it goes in bursts of activity, sometimes just once. It sound a little like the doorlock system, but the locks never move while its happening (although they sometimes activate randomly also)

And another thing, when in third gear I can hear an ever so slight clicking sound coming from the transmission when I manually downshift (no, I don't drive it like a race car, the brakes are worn so I use the engine to slow down sometimes) I've run through all the gears and third is the only one making this noise.Am I going to need transmission work in the near future?

So funny to see a post about this.

Yesterday while driving I heard a noise from the center console, almost behind the CD player. Sounds like a light clunk clunk clunk, almost like a bomb or something, don't know how to explain it. Wasn't very loud.

Anyway, it lasted for about one minute, and then went away. Haven't heard it again since. Looking forward to hear what this is!

Is your climate control and/or stereo screwed in tight behind the wood panel?

It can cause clunking, if not.

I know the noise I was hearing happened every few seconds, evenly. Also, when I hear the noise I pulled over and stopped, and the car continued to make the noise. The AC and CD player were both turned off at one point also, when I was trying to figure out what it was.

Then after about a minute, the noise just stopped. I don't think it's the CD player or AC unit loose, because it only happened once so far, evenly spaced light noises, and I was stopped when the noise was happening. Never happened over bumps or anything.

Thanks for the suggestion, I can double check that it's tight just to make sure!

The noise happens sometimes while idling so it can't be the stereo.

I just wondered if there is a relay or something located there, it's most definitely electrical.

Also, still wondering if the noisy 3rd gear is something to worry about..
