I signed up a month or so ago and have a few posts in the Z32 arena, but thought I'd drop an introductory line here and note how cool it is that we've got a community like this online. I bought an original-owner 1991 300ZX twin turbo this past June (first Z-car) and was lucky to get one that's in pretty good shape. It's mostly stock - has larger rotors and exhaust when I got it and I've since put in an intake... little things to get some more power out of it will come after some maintenance. Clutch and 120k service are due soon and will be a winter project  Glad to be part of the family!

Welcome aboard! You'll have to bring it to our Carlisle meet we have typically in May.

If you've never done the 120k, it's a good learning experience. You learn a ton about these cars doing it and gain a lot of confidence in your maintenance abilities.

PapaSmurf, thanks for the heads-up! I'll definitely keep an eye out for that.

Ace, nope, car had 117k when I got it in June... up to nearly 118k now. I'm fairly confident in what I can do with what I've had to deal with on our other cars over the years. Of course this is a whole new animal, but I'm looking forward to learning everything I can on it. Next up is those dang coil connectors. 4 out of the 6 either were broken, missing the seal, or both, and all were at least cracked by the time I had the plugs changed out.

I ended up throwing a whole new harness in mine. Wiring specialties FTW. But if you're not yanking the engine, the coil connectors aren't that hard to re-pin.

I got the connectors through SZ - sitting on the bench waiting for my lazy self to get to it. Doesn't help when the car is running as good as it is and it's as nice as it was this weekend. Since I changed the plugs (speculating that in doing so, I established a decent connection at the coil pack), I only very occasionally feel one cylinder drop out. Prior to that, the #4 cylinder was just plain dead. Hoping I have a good connection 100% of the time once I clean the contacts and get the connectors on... if so, I should be good with that harness, but we'll see.

There are at least a couple other electrical issues I need to sort out, 2 that I'm aware of:
- Reverse light switch, suspect it's failed since bulbs are good, but don't come on. Planning on checking that out when I do the clutch.
- ABS issue where it occasionally kicks on when slowing to a stop (probably 5% of the time).

Sounds like you've got a good game plan. Was the car originally an auto? If so, you may need to splice some wires to get reverse to work. Super easy procedure covered in all the M/T conversion write ups. And for the ABS issue, I'd say wheel speed sensors are the culprit on that.

Thanks for the tips, Ace! No, it's an original MT. I've read in a few places that the switch has been known to fail - I need to spend a little more time under the car to take a look at it... and get it a little higher off the ground so I can maybe see a little better. The ABS thing is a minor nuisance, so another item to be put on the list.

I'd make some ramps, and be careful where you jack from. There are a lot of places that look like good jack points but aren't. Check robo's site:

Oh yea... I found his site I think before I even signed up on here. Maybe even before I bought the car in June. It’s a true wealth of knowledge regarding the z32 tt. Being he hails from Harrisburg, wish I could get in touch to thank him in person - we’re up there to see my in-laws about once a month. It’s nothing short of a gold mine.

Well, I FINALLY got around to changing out the coil connectors - was a nice surprise to be able to do it without taking the balance tube off. It really wasn't a big deal to do, especially considering all the old connecters cracked open like peanut shells. Aside from them being broken/missing seals, reason I changed them was that I'd occasionally lose spark on a cylinder - this was an easy first step to try and remedy that. Time will tell. I've only driven the 5 miles to work this morning, but so far, so good.

On deck are shifter bushings and clutch line replace (decided to ditch the whole thing for one single SS line). I've still yet to reach 119k, but the timing belt job is looming on the horizon.

Hope all is well with everyone! Anyone heard from Ace? It's been a while.
