Within the next couple months I will be due for my first oil change on my 2011 G37x Coupe. I always used Mobil 1 in my 2005. I always thought it was worth the extra cost but a few people have said it doesn't make much difference.

I am still inclined to use Mobil 1. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Bill

Some folks run Synthetic because they can go longer between changes.
I run it because I believe (from what I've read) it protects the engine's internals better.
My buddy is a retired master car & truck mechanic who now teaches part time at a local college. He runs synthetic for both of those reasons.
I normally change it between 3K and 4K in all of our cars cause by that time it looks dirty.
I buy 5 qrt jugs of M1 Syn when they go on sale, so an oil change costs me < $30

i use synthetic for those two main reasons...

mobile 1 and penzoil ultra dont cost much more than dino oil and are full synthetics, but im usually using royal purple which is kinda pricey... but always synthetic

plus you help us become less oil dependent lol by using synthetic oil lol

I've been using Royal Purple for over a decade now on my vehicles. It definitely makes a difference compared to dino.

I don't believe it is worth the extra cost.
As long as it is meeting SAE requirements you should be fine.
Going more than 4k miles between oil changes is probably ok for those that lease because they will be rid of the car before the damage from sludge buildup occurs.
The same by products of an internal combustion engine collect and contaminate whatever type of oil you use whether conventional or synthetic. Some manufactures would like you to believe that because they charge more for their product that it is better for your engine.
Same goes for gasoline. Some refer to "cheap gas" when they mean regular 87 octane.
If it is going to make you feel good to spend the extra money on expensive oil go for it.
In my opinion and experience it is not worth it.
I get 200k miles out of an engine by changing oil every 3500 to 4000k miles.
My 42nd oil change was a few weeks ago.

I buy whatever is on sale.
just my $.02

telcoman, interesting to see you running with regular oil and gas w/o problem such a long time. I am guessing you driving very conservatively w/o any hard acceleration?

just my 2 cents,2010 G37Xs,just changed my oil at 7,500 interval from dino oil to Mobil1.
results avergae MPH 70, difference in MPG, dino maybe 23,Mobil1 25,highway driving.

is it worth it besides the engin protection, longer between oil change at a savings of at least
1 gallon more per fill with Mobil1 average 400 miles a fill.

$3 per gallon gasx10 fills between oil changes= $30 savings

5Qt of Mobil 1 $22-$24 @ Walmart cheap Dino $10 for 5 Qts.

$14 more for Mobil 1 but a savings of $16 from better MPG over 4K miles

= $16 to put in 401K :gapteeth:

I've used regular in a 2011 G37 loaner with no issues either.

I've had a G25 2011 loaner for the past two weeks and put over 1000 miles on it while waiting for my beloved G35 6speed manual to be repaired.

Also used regular 87 octane but of course the G25 has much less hp

Still the vehicle is pretty responsive even with a much smaller engine and a 7 speed automatic.

When gas hits $4.00 a gallon we'll see how many will stick with premium.

Regular is up to $3.31 here in cental jersey. Premium is about $0.30 more but I never pay much attention to those prices. It hurts my eyes to look :chuckle:

Dealer charges me $32.99 for a oil change..

I'm not sure what goes in it. The stickers are Pennzoil stickers, but the motor oil has a redish tint to it like high mileage mobil 1, or pennzoil.

I change it every 3k miles.

And, I wouldn't expect there would be any in the short term other than some possible pinging. I would be more concerned with the long term.

More concerned with NOT getting premium than the price difference.
However, we also don't put a ton of miles on our cars.....if we did, we would probably have different cars. :yesnod

im sure telcoman takes it easy on his car, so he gets away with 87 gas and dino oil...

my car sees above 5000 rpms at least once every day... like i start off my day with a 0-60 pull to wake me up.

I love my G37x!

U guys still replace ur oil at 3750 even with synthetic or go the full mileage its designed for? I frequently push my card hard, but have been using regular the whole time... debating if I should go synthethic or not. My dealer charges me 45 for regular oil changes, wonder how much synthetic runs.

Between 3k and 3.5k for me.
M1 Syn + OEM filter = < $30

Sure, I can afford to have it done, but
1. I don't like waiting
2. I like to do it at my convenience
3. I like working on cars....most of the time...
4. I use the money saved to buy more tools, fishing gear, beerz, etc..:gapteeth:
