I got my plates today! finally. and Paid nearly $400 for them. I was just curious as to how much everyone else is paying for theirs? I am in Colorado wanted to know if it is that big of a difference for the rest of the country?

$14.00 !

Ok..... mine were transferred from the Titan.

We don't pay personal property tax on vehicles here in TN. We do however have what we "affectionately" call the Wheel Tax, which is different for every county. In my county, it costs $84 a year to license a car ($24 - plate, $60 - wheel tax).

Usually connecticut is horrible about these kinds of things... it cost me $160 for new plates, because they had my name and birthdate wrong on my old registration... (don't you love how that comes up when you go to buy a new car!!)

$340 here in NH. It's our form of a sales tax...

$30 state tax, $35 county tax. County tax is applied to fixing county roads. In Snohomish county, we actually have pretty decent roads because our citizens are smart enough to pay for them...

In King county (where Seattle is), there used to be a monorail tax, too, to raise money for building mass transit. However, it appears that the people there were willing to whine endlessly about traffic gridlock, but torpedo at absolutely every avenue any idea to actually do anything about it.

(There was a study done... to ease gridlock through downtown and raise rush hour speeds to 45 mph from the current average of 18, it would require widening I-5 from 4 lanes to 64.)

I hate people. I WANT mass transit. I can't get mass transit because of all the NIMBY jerk-holes in existence. Guess what? It's GOT to be in SOMEONE'S back yard. So shut up and deal.

Rant over. We now resume our regularly scheduled Nico discussion.

It depends on how the state handles property taxes, etc. In NC I paid about $59 to transfer my plates from the Probe to the Versa, but once a year we get a separate property tax bill from the state that has to be paid before we can register. In SC, my Dad always had a larger registration fee but no property tax bill, because it was figured into his registration.

$320 up in Douglas County, Colorado. But you have a more expensive car with the SL.

Each county charges the same. The tax is used to help pay for the local highways, state patrol, county cops...

About $140 I think in Iowa. It's based on sale price and the Finance guy at the dealer laughed because he wasn't used to seeing plates that low.

Oh, we more than make up for what we don't pay in auto registration with what we pay in sales tax. We have one of the highest, if not THE highest, sales tax rates in the entire country.

8.9% in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties. Only groceries and postage stamps are tax-free.

No income tax, but relatively high property taxes. Pick your poison.

We are in the same boat here in Texas "Taxus". Our sales tax rate isn't far behind, 8.25%. Only certain items are exempt from groceries like milk and water, everything else is taxed. We don't have an income tax either so we make up for it in property tax also. A the average home owner pays about 4,000 to 6,000 in tax a year. That's with a $100,000 -$120,000 house.

Thanks for making me feel better, Proxim! Our sales tax is 7% and we do have a state income tax, but I just paid the annual property tax bill on our house and even though it's above the range you noted, it was under $800!

Our taxes used to be 15% (GST & PST), after a few years now it is down to 13%. We pay both taxes on alot of things, except groceries (we only pay one tax). However, they want to harmonize both taxes next year so that we will pay it on both! Plus our property taxes are extremely high and we pay income tax!

Mine cost $320 as well when I had to register for the new license plates. CO really likes to get people on that.
