Refrigerant Leak leads to AC shut off?

I have a question, my Altima has a big leak on the refrigerant line. No refrigent in the system at all.

When i turn on the AC, the magnetic clutch does not engage.

My question is, does the AC system stop working with 0 pressure of refrigerant?

Yes, there is a dual-pressure switch. The AC will not work if the pressure is too high or too low.
