my buddy buys problem cars and fixes them to resell and he just got a civic that has a carbon fiber spoiler on it that the clear coat is chipping on.does anyone know a way to refurbish the clear coat on it without f***ing it up?my guess would be a light sand maybe wet sand and then just spray it with a clear coat and buff/polish

all help is appreciated

ill try to get some pictures of the problem spots cause some are all the way down to the fibers

is it just the clear coat cracking? Or is it the resin?

Either way its a simple fix.

If its clearcoat, resand with high grit (see 1000+) sandpaper til its smooth and respray with 2-3 coats of clearcoat. Make sure it is UV resistant clearcoat!

If its the resin then you'll have to buy a small amount of resin from a carbon fiber/fiberglass depot

(I suggest compositeenvisions.com)

buy the resin specifically for carbon fiber. Mix it as directed, wait maybe 5 mins for it to setup a little in whatever you are mixing it in, lather it on the part lightly by pouring it on. It should even out by its own. Let dry in a 80 degree climate with low humidity for around 3 hours or so. If it is dry and not tacky then go ahead and start sanding (with 800 then higher, up to 1500) to the level it needs to be at. When you are satisfied with how thick it is then go ahead and spray it with 2-3 coats of clearcoat.

if you have any problems then ask people on http://www.fiberglassforums.com
