While my car was in the paint shop, we were looking at some of the chrome. The surround on the license plate was getting bad. Bad news from the dealer that the surround is not available as a separate part. I thought this might be an opportunity for something new.

I wanted something in a brushed or machined finish to match the my new wheels. I played with a few different things came up with the method.

I put the chrome 5 next to the new finish on my badges for reference.

Clean the badge off with a light Scotchbrite pad and dishwashing soap. Let it dry. I had an old synthetic sanding pad (I'm unsure of the grit). Its just abrasive enough to scratch the surface. Keep the strokes all in the same direction. Once you are happy with the results, wash the part again in the soap solution and let dry. Then 3 light coats with a satin clearcoat.

Fun with diatoms!

Never use that combination on porcelain.

Finished photo of the rear. Waiting on my grille surround to return from paint to finish the front.
