Any tricks to properly changing transmission fluid in a '96 Q? Can I take it to an instant oil change place without much worry? Does it take a special kind of fluid?

are you just wanting to do a drain and refill? if you do that youll only get about 4-5 out of the 14 quarts the trans holds...

Wow! 14 quarts! Will it not be worth it to do a fluid exhange?

If your trans fluid hasnt been changed in a while id do a mechanical exchange.. You can also do the drain/refill deal (drain pan, fill up, run car for 2 mins, repeat until you go through say 18-20 quarts), however if your not inclined to do it yourself a mechanical exchange is by far the easiest....

My local shop will do a full flush with 16 quarts for $70 including valvoline fluid, so I find that hard to beat. Not synthetic, but if you replace it yearly therse no problems!!! $70/year to keep your trans fluid AS NEW is a small price to pay compared to $2500 installed for a new one!
