redtop or black top?

i fairly new on this but i have seen redtop/balcktop engines and visually speaking the only differnce is the cover. now i would likt to know if im over looking the difference between the two? also how new of a motor can i go on a sr20det if i have a 90 240sx, something with the least modifications?

The newest s13 sr20 would be a type-x blacktop. Made from 96-98.They are kinda rare and not easy to find. The same modifications as any s13 sr20.I would stick with a s13 sr20det. There is no difference in power between the 2.What you need to understand though, is that the redtops are the oldest. Blacktops are the newest of the s13 series. Either one you get, plan on rebuilding it to have a reliable setup.

ok so as far as black and red its kind of the same just one is newer but same performance. as far as rebuilt goes am i looking at a full motor and transmission rebuilt or just something small?
