"The Annual Sweetwater Jaycee's World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up" is hosted yearly in Sweetwater in west Texas over the second weekend in March....welcomes some 40,000 visitors. The inaugural event was held in 1958, and 2003 marked the first festival at which no one was snake-bitten....The event commences on a Thursday with a parade through the downtown area, followed that evening by a Miss Snake Charmer Pageant held in the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. ...Snake wranglers enter the pit and walk among the diamondbacks, passing them out one by one to staffers that first milk them, then kill, skin and fry them or hold them back for living sale...A separate building adjacent to the coliseum hosts countless vendor stalls, all selling rattlesnake skins, stuffed rattlesnakes, knives with rattlesnake-head handles and festival T-shirts. There is also a gun and knife show, and beer for sale. Outside, a barbecue cook-off -- fried pork rinds are a big favorite -- enhances the carnival. More beer tents round out the experience....
Someone needs to attend this and report back. If I wasn't so scared of them, I'd put this on my list of things to see before I die.
