do yuo have to redline to get the most of of a gear? i thought that after a certain rpm, you would peak and fall off

Well yeah, but you would actually have less power when you upshift because of the powerband. So redlining really does help you out. Its only if you go beyond redline when the power drops off too much. Take a good look at a dyno sheet and you'll know what im saying. (but it depends on what car you're driving too)
