The HICAS light has come on red in my 1991 240sx. The car has aprox. 179K on it. I just had the clutch hydraulics replaced but the person I bought the car from said the light has been on for about 1.5yrs. Could driving the car with the light on like this have caused harm to the car or HICAS system? What can I do to find the problem? This is the first car with HICAS I have ever had, so I am a little lost.

Check the fluid level at your steering pump deposit, when it´s down it trigers the Hicas light.

And runing whith the light on will not harm your car but Hicas doesn't work.

Thanks for the help, I am glad there won't be any harm to the car. I added fluid and it didn't go off so I am going to have it checked out further.

HICAS or Highly Intellegent Controlled Active Steering

To my understanding is a system by which the rear wheels adjust/steer 1 degree in either direction when the front wheels turn. Perhaps this thread will help

or just try searching a little and read around.
